Why Writing Online Is the Smartest Move for Tech Pros 🧠
What you’re missing by not sharing your knowledge—and how to start today.
As a tech person, you might think that technical skills are all that matters.
But you are wrong.
I’m sorry.
Just look around and see all the tech writers creating a business around their ideas:
Through writing.
Through teaching.
Through community.
You already have the knowledge.
It’s sitting in your brain somewhere.
You just haven’t taken the first step yet.
What’s holding you back?
Here’s where you have to be careful though.
I spent most of 2023 chasing shiny objects:
Likes on Twitter.
Followers on LinkedIn.
Trying to go viral on Reddit.
None of that was my thing.
Instead, focusing solely on Substack proved to be the right choice:
Steady growth.
Direct connection to my readers.
A simple way to build a business around my ideas.
Substack is the platform for tech writers in 2025.
I will die on this hill.
If you think you don’t have the time, think again.
You should:
Write for 2 hours—not 10.
Engage for 30 minutes—not 3 hours.
Plan for 15 minutes—not 5 days.
Rest for 8 hours—not 5.
Stop overthinking and start showing up.
Consistency wins.
Burnout doesn’t.
You’re a human, not a robot—so treat yourself like one.
There’s someone out there waiting for your ideas.
This note is self-explanatory:
As a technical (and not-so-technical) writer, I’ve been able to present my ideas to people who want to read them.
I come from academia, where your peer-reviewed papers are read by a few of your colleagues.
So imagine my surprise when I started getting 20K monthly views on my writing.
And yes, the effort pays off eventually.
But it takes time, like everything that truly matters in life.
If you think this is going to be easy, think again.
If you think this is going to be an “I-left-my-9-to-5-to-write-online-and-I’m-making-a-fortune-in-6-months“ story, think again.
This is a long game.
Is a game of a lifetime.
So being patient and being smart is key.
People have already started writing, building, and scaling their businesses.
Substack is presenting us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
And people are not letting it pass.
One of my friends told me last week:
What if I spend ten years building my business and then I look back in regret at all the time I could have spent doing something else?
And that’s totally fair… you should have your priorities straight.
But here’s a thing to keep in mind:
There’s no greater regret than the one coming from:
The things you didn’t do because you didn’t trust yourself.
The things you never tried because you thought they didn’t suit you.
The things you were too scared to do because there was something at stake.
And if you can live with that then that’s ok too.
I want to see you grow alongside me.
I plan to be sharing my ideas on Substack in 2025.
I won’t stop.
Because I’ve been going at it for just 5 months and have seen massive results.
